Building an Effective Morning and Evening Skincare Routine

23 September 2026 · 6 min read · Senara Editorial

Most skincare advice fails at the same point: it assumes you have the patience for nine steps twice a day. A routine of three steps you never skip will beat nine you dread.

In the morning, cleanse gently, moisturise, then protect. Cleansing is short — a low-lather bar or a rinse with warm water is enough for most skin. Moisturiser goes on damp skin, which is the detail that decides whether it feels heavy or comfortable. Sunscreen follows, and it is the single step with the strongest evidence behind it.

In the evening, cleanse properly to take off sunscreen and the day, then treat if you are treating something. One active at a time: a retinoid or an acid, never both on the same night. Finish with the same moisturiser.

Give any new product three weeks before you judge it. Skin turns over slowly, and the first fortnight usually tells you about irritation rather than results. Add one product at a time so you can tell what caused what.

If something stings, burns or leaves you flushed for more than an hour, stop. A routine should be boring, and boring is exactly what steady skin looks like.
